US gave 400 million dollars to Pak in 1947. That is the starting point of US engagement with Pak just at the point of creation of Pak and not a recent phenomenon. Why US invested in Pak? New RSS chief in Bangalore

RSS definition of" hindu" is very secular though it gets attacked by business-minded english media guys. It is not a narrow minded definition of one who is not buddhist, not muslim, not christian, not jew, not jain, not sikh. The defintion says all those people of India who have inherited and follow the ancient Indian culture and knowledge. So, the current buddhists, jains, sikhs are all hindus. So what about christian and muslim? Since traditional Indian knowledge allows one to worship the Parabrahman in whatever one feels happy about (Ista Devata), they also are very much hindus. So, when next time RSS says hindus do not be under the impression of the narrow definition.

Vande Mataram fatwa slammed by true Indian Muslims

The Muslim Rashtriya Manch has slammed the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind for passing a resolution, which described Vande Mataram as un-Islamic and asked Muslims not to sing it.

Action and Reaction - Modi

Riots often occur in reaction to a perceived grievance or out of dissent. Godhra was the ghastly incident which triggered off Gujarat riots. The secular, left lib, intellectuals have gone to great extent to mis-represent the riots and misinterpret Modi's statements.

‘Kriya pratikriya ki chain chal rahi hai. Hum chahate hain ki na kriya ho aur na pratikriya. (What is happening is a chain of action and reaction. What I want is that there should be no action and no reaction).’ Asked about the violence which erupted throughout Gujarat on the day of the VHP-sponsored bandh, he said:

Godhra mein jo parson hua, jahan par chalees mahilaon aur bacchon ko zinda jala diya, is mein desh mein aur videsh mein sadma pahunchna swabhavik tha. Godhra ke is ilake ke logon ki criminal tendencies rahi hain. In logon ne pahele mahila teachers ka khoon kiya. Aur ab yeh jaghanya apraadh kiya hai jiski pratikria ho rahi hai. (It is natural that what happened in Godhra day before yesterday, where forty women and children were burnt alive, has shocked the country and the world. The people in that part of Godhra have had criminal tendencies. Earlier, these people had murdered women teachers. And now they have done this terrible crime for which a reaction is going on).

Modi's statements are given above, along with the translation. Whether taken within the context or without, there is no call for violence in Modi's remarks. Unlike Rajiv Gandhi's infamous statement (“Some riots took place in the country following the murder of Indiraji. We know the people were very angry and for a few days it seemed that India had been shaken. But, when a mighty tree falls, it is only natural that the earth around it does shake a little.”), there is no classification of violence into bad and good in Modi's statements. China attacks India in a surprise!

Some strategists are crying that China will attack India in a few years. Some say it cannot happen between two nuclear nations or atleast when US is with us. Well is really US with us? US seems to be in a hurry to get an honorable exit from Afghan and do not want to indulge in any tensions outside its land. Its own problems of economic recession restrict them. Also the incresing dependence of US economy with China will further tie its hand down. Brahma Chellany, a scholar, strategy thinker, a Profesor at Center for Policy Research, New Delhi, writes on China inching towards war with India. The voices in China are increasingly becoming anti-India, and as everyone knows there are no unoffical voices in China. Further, as Pakistan involves itself in its chaos, it has a lost a surrogate warrior. Having gobbled up Aksai Chin (62 war, double the size of Switzerland), Tibet (before this, China was never a land neighbor of India) and now claiming for Arunachal Pradesh as the southern part of erstwhile Tibet and as a legal belonging to China. There were serious uproar in concerned Indian civil society with the knowledge that: everything gets published in China with that government's permission. India and China - Water War

Most of the rivers of north India (except Ganga) start from Tibetan plateau. After the invasion, slaughter and annexation of Tibet by China six decades ago, now India has to confront China on water. China has not accepted for India's long-standing demand on transparency on water related information about these rivers. In fact, some of the floods may be related to the non-cooperation of China to Indian authorities on water-information (rate of inflow, water levels). We have several specimens of people who call themselves Hindus:

Tearing-my-chest-Hindus: Firebrand Hindus whose commitment to, and faith in Hinduism is unquestionable but usually lack the intellectual rigour to defend attacks on Sanatana Dharma.
Intellectual Hindus: Scholarly types who are up for a good debate anytime, and are willing to defend Sanatana Dharma on the strength of their erudition.
Practising Hindus: May also be the scholarly types. These Hindus live Hinduism complete with all its rituals and injunctions. They may or not understand the meaning, rationale, or significance of the rituals they perform. Their commitment, too, is unquestionable.
Atheist Hindus: A bastardized breed that wears atheism as a proud band on its forehead. This breed very vocally proclaims that it is “nastika” because Hinduism accommodates even nastikas in its fold. This breed’s reasoning typically stems from an extensive reading of Ayn Rand and the Western conception of God and seeks to apply it to Hinduism.
Safe Hindus: A confused creature that shuns uncomfortable questions and justifies its stance under the guise of Sarva Dharma Samabhava (all religions/faiths are equal). This creature also describes itself variously as a “believing Hindu.”

As regards the defense and propagation of Sanatana Dharma I hold #1 as of little use, and #4 and #5 as non-Hindus. But the reason that motivated me to make this list was #5.

We know the sage Vishwamitra who discovered Gayatri for the benefit of humanity. In modern days, Sriram Sharma Acharya stands as a friend to the whole world (Vishwa-mitra). He founded "All World Gayatri Parivar" giving gayatri to everyone irrespective of caste, religion, gender or race. He took pains by maintaining rigorous discipline and complete 24 lakh gayatri puruscharan before establishing the parivar. The tapobhal of this Sadhu becomes evident when one visits their ashram, Shantikunj at Haridwar.

I visited Shantikunj recently and had a very memorable experience. Every morning starts with gayatri homa (havan), where anyone and everyone can participate in it. After Tibet, now it is Xinjiang. China is immigrating a lot of chinese population to Tibet and Xinjiang to deliberately change the demography and complete the process of invasion started in 1950. China also has created a fake Chinese Dalai Lama, claiming that he is the real Lama. The tibetan and Xinjiang languages are almost on the verge of extinction. The local cultures are crushed. The natives are put into menial jobs and well paid jobs are taken over by chinese. China has been methodically expanding its terroritory since long. India is not recognizing the Alexander in our neighbor.

Please read the article about the progress Christianity has made in India in the recent years - starts on page 26 (God's Moment for India). This is a must read article that summarizes the astonishing progress made by missionaries within the last decade. This article claims that Orissa is now 28% Christian. You should also read the article on page 6 ("They Burn Bibles in India"). There are several reasons for this astronomical success; the key reasons are the following.

1. The caste system practiced in India (and the inhuman treatment of dalits and other poorer segments of the population in some corners of the country - a country where Lord Krishna Himself once walked).

2. Money - Billions of dollars are entering the Indian society for conversion purposes. This money flow has transformed the missionary work into a homegrown movement. Read about local missionaries highlighted in the article. Evangelizing is now a well-oiled machine in India helped by corrupt politicians and media.

3. Support of political leadership (Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Y Samuel Reddy (CM of Andhra and her family along with her political subordinates)

4. Commitment of foreign missionaries to bring India to Jesus

5. Violent approach taken by many Indian groups to confront the attack on their heritage. This is not only against Dharma tradition; it only helps missionaries to raise more money by using any violent incident as a marketing tool.

6. Clinging to Manu Smriti (caste system and degrading treatment of sections of the society) and refusing to become a proselytizing religion.

At this rate the Hindu faith will become a minority faith inside India within the next few decades (it is a simple diffusion process).

Underprivileged in IITs- Thanks to Anand Sharma

This is an example which demonstrates reservations are not the way to go forward. Anand Sharma has started an IIT coaching school in Bihar called Ramanujam School of Mathematics. They take 30 students from below poverty line from the many who apply. This year 6000 applied and based on 3 screening tests, 30 were taken. And all 30 secured good ranks at JEE and now on their way to the great temples of modern India, the IITs. You must see the aspirations of these kids to believe and get yourself convinced about the scientific future of India. The road of preparation for IITs hasn't been easy for the students and neither for teachers. Anand Sharma has been assaulted many a times. But you know the lion's heart always wins.

After the defeat, the BJP's internal thought process or introspection is in multiple contradicting voices.

- Koenrad Elst said BJP was portrayed as a Congress's B team to the electorate with nothing original to offer. The lack of clarity on ideology and the hesitation to associate itself to the roots of Indian culture are the prime causes of failure. - Sudheendra Kularni, a key aide of L K Advani, instrumental in Advani's Jinnah speech, opposes the above argument and accuses Sangh parivar for not backing LK totally. - Brajesh Mishra (not inside BJP), previous NSA, a close aide of Vajpayee, speaks to media "BJP's endorsement of Varun's speech caused the debacle".

Out of these criticism and introspection, rarely one finds the genuine soul-searching. Anil Chawla, a former IITB classmate of Sudheendra Kulkarni, answers him by writing an open letter to him in Outlook accusing him as a stooge of Advani (or the otherway). He rightly criticizes LK for bringing in mediocre people around him and denying the opportunity for hard-working Sanghi, and thereby missing out on the wisdom of ground-reality. BJP needs to flush out LK and his coterie: Sushma, Sudheendra K and many other mediocre people and find people from the middle rung of Sangh and promote the merited, sincere and visionary workers. Sri Lanka fought against, or in fact crushed, the terrorist organisation, LTTE. India sided with Rajapaksha's endeavor. Did we have any other options? India was in an inevitable position to help Rajapaksha's violent solution.

Brahma Chellany, Professor of Policy studies, Center for Policy Research, New Delhi, writes (henceforth the indented italics are Brahma's words):

More people have been killed in Sri Lanka this year than in Afghanistan, Iraq and Gaza combined, according to the United Nations.

To decipher this inevitability, one has to see the other option. What if India had refused? Were other nations ready to support? As a matter of fact, the answer is an emphatic Yes. China and Pak were more than willing to support. Brahma Chellany gives an account on how China supported this massacre.

Chinese Jian-7 fighter-jets, anti-aircraft guns, JY-11 3D air surveillance radars and other supplied weapons played a key role in the Sri Lankan military successes against the Tamil Tigers. After a daring 2007 raid by the Tigers’ air wing wrecked 10 government military aircraft, Beijing was quick to supply six warplanes on long-term credit. Such weapon supplies, along with $1 billion in aid to the tottering Sri Lankan economy last year alone, helped tilt the military balance in favour of government forces.

The delusive question: Is there any primary advantage for China for this act?

Beijing has moved aggressively to secure contracts to build ports in the Indian Ocean rim, including in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma and Sri Lanka.

What is the harm in China building ports in Indian Ocean coastal region?

Initially, the projects are commercial in nature. But in the subsequent phase, as exemplified by the current expansion of Pakistan’s Chinese-built Gwadar port into a naval base, Beijing’s strategic interests openly come into play. Gwadar, overlooking the Strait of Hormuz through which 40% of the world’s oil supply passes, epitomises how an increasingly ambitious Beijing, brimming with hard cash from a blazing economic growth, is building new links in the Indian Ocean. In addition to eyeing Gwadar as an anchor for its rapidly modernising navy, Beijing has sought naval and commercial links with four other Indian Ocean nations — the Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius and Madagascar.

And India still fails to understand the basic motto of China. China's motto is to establish hegemony over the land around Indian Ocean and finally over the world, however implausible it may look!

In all the countries where China stands accused of being an enabler of repression, its military aid has been motivated by one of three considerations: to gain access to oil and mineral resources; to market its goods and services; or to find avenues to make strategic inroads. In Sri Lanka, Beijing has calculatedly sought to advance its wider strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region.

China has already surrounded India by helping Pak with money, arms and nukes, Nepal by establishing maoism, Burma by military rule, Tibet by invasion, Bangladesh by helping infiltration into India and Sri Lanka for the strategic control of Indian ocean. Inside India, it funds naxalism and maoism. Media, as always, can easily be bought. What do you think will happen in future?

Reaching out the under-priviledged

There are 8 crore vanavasi (tribals) in India. They form an integral part of the country. Is there any effort done by us to provide education and access to facilities of the modern man?

I don't know about the government but I know of Vanavasi kalyan which has been doing the work all over India with more than 1000 full-time volunteers with more than 30 women included. They also conduct forest treks where you get to live in forests for a day and the vanavasis will host you. So, the next time, if your company wants to arrange a retreat / trip / trek, suggest this. They are going to have a live experience. Aren't the software engineers bored of going to resort trips?!

Be completely assured that this is not a christian missionary organization converting adivasis into christian fold. The adivasis local customs and rituals are respected and honored.

Books that do not make it to awards, but should have

It has been a habit that people denigrating India and its culture find critical appreciation. They receive awards, they travel more and write more and denigrate more. Arundhati Roy and co. have found international acclaims in this route. So, one may ask "Isn't criticism needed for growth?" The answer is an emphatic "Yes". But the people with awards always have ulterior motives mainly just to denigrate Indic culture (I don't know what kicks they get) and secondly either to protest a developmental project or siding with criminals in the name of human rights. The problem is not with rationalization but with selective rationalization.

People who take pains for scholarly works of the form

Arun Shourie's "The Parliamentary system": describing the political system in India and suggesting reforms for ably thinking leaders to come and lead the country, than to fragment the electorate resulting in half-baked shouting fringe-group leaders to come at the helm.

Arun Shourie's "The Eminent Historians" describing in detail the distortions of Indian history done by marxists. The evidences taken completely from government records. The "why" and "how" of distortions lucidly described.

Brahma Chellany's (Center for Policy Research) "The Asian Juggernaut" accounts for the rise of India, China and Japan. The economic and military might are analysed with statistics. A very rare piece useful for approaches in foreign policy and to basically to know where and how we stand with our competitors.

Pratap Bhanu Mehta's (Director, Center for Policy Research) "Public Institutions in India" gives a detailed account on education institutions, judiciary, bureacracy etc. A reference book for anyone aspiring for Indian civil services.

B Raman's "The Kaoboys" eyeopening book on how Intelligence (Indian Intelligence) works. Their interaction with the administration, politicians, criminals and other intelligence agencies.

are never given their fraction of lime light. If in other countries, people would have honored these authors and inducted in some strategic decision making bodies of the govenment. And we will wait for the day when India learns!

Aatish Tasser's (son of columnist Tavleen Singh) book "Stranger to History" was one of the contenders against Adiga's book "The white tigers" for the prize.
